Failure of Materialism
Failure of Materialism argues that the persistence of the "hard problem" of consciousness reflects not a deficiency in neuroscience but an incomplete ontology. Contemporary neuroscience maps with extraordinary precision how the brain detects, transmits, and processes information, yet offers no principled account of why such processing should be accompanied by subjective experience at all — why activity in the visual cortex should appear as redness, or nociceptive signalling as pain. This book proposes that a missing conceptual layer, long preserved within Advaita Vedānta but never previously systematized in these terms, can close that explanatory gap. Drawing on close textual analysis of the Upaniṣads, the Bhagavad Gītā, and the Purāṇas — most extensively the Bhāgavata Purāṇa's allegory of Purañjana and Purañjanī — alongside neuroscience, genetics, and philosophy of mind, the book develops an informational architecture of individuality built on five interlocking concepts: tanmātra (the presentational interface through which neural representation becomes phenomenal experience), vāsanā (redefined not as latent tendency or memory but as the enduring informational organization created by an individual's habitual responses to experience), saṃskāra (its constituent traces), the Liṅga Śarīra (the evolving informational body carrying this architecture across embodiments), and Chitragupta (reread not as a mythological scribe but as the process by which responses to experience are inscribed into that architecture). Subsequent chapters extend the model to genetics and embryonic development, the conservation of information across time (Śeṣa and Kāla), and the informational conditions under which mokṣa brings rebirth to an end. Throughout, the book maintains one safeguard against collapsing into a subtler materialism: every element of this informational architecture belongs to Prakṛti, the transactional order (vyavahārika), and is itself mithyā — dependently real, contingent upon consciousness, never a rival to it. Consciousness, the witness, is never produced and never evolves; it is not what travels in rebirth — only the informational architecture does. The result is neither a reduction of Vedānta to neuroscience nor of neuroscience to metaphysics, but a proposed shared vocabulary — one the author suggests may also open a more rigorous, non-dismissive approach to extrasensory perception, out-of-body and near-death experience, and eventually to rebirth itself as an empirically tractable question about the informational architecture of individuality.
